Message from Dr. Leo ESAKI

- Director of Tsukuba International Congress Center, President of Tsukuba Science Academy
Dr. Leo Esaki - Graduated from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, The University of Tokyo. A physicist who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1973), the Order of Culture (1974), and the International Prize of the American Physical Society (1985). His wide-ranging achievements, especially in the field of semiconductor physics, which is the basis of modern electronics, include the discovery of the tunnel effect in semiconductor PN junctions and the proposal and realization of the semiconductor superlattice concept. A researcher who has pioneered a completely new field and has had a major impact on modern condensed matter physics in general.
I have high expectations for the “imagination”
of junior and senior high school students!
Our intelligence can be broadly divided into two categories.
One is the ability to analyze, understand, and judge things, and to discriminate fairly (judicious mind). The other is the ability to create new ideas based on rich creativity and foresight (creative mind). Discernment, having an impersonal aspect, can be said to deal with the known subjects, whereas creativity is individual and challenges the unknown. This creativity is the driving force for the reform and progress and will continue to develop human civilization. I would like to see young people like you develop your creativity.
What is Tsukuba Science Edge?
Discuss with leading scientists!
"Tsukuba Science Edge" is a place to present scientific "ideas" based on school class assignments and club activities, but individual participation is also welcome.
You will have the opportunity to meet many junior and senior high school students from Japan and abroad and discuss ideas for your research presentations.
You will also have the opportunity to have the live discussions with scientific instructors.
The venue for the presentation is the "Tsukuba International Congress Center" where scientists from all over the world gather!
This is your chance to stand on the same stage as real scientists and researchers. Please come and join us at "Tsukuba Science Edge," where you can meet the "cutting edge of science" together with researchers!
Message for Teachers and Parents
Cultivate children's creativity and logical thinking through science!
Conventionally, science-related contests for junior and senior high school students are mainly paper reviews, essay-based contests such as the Japan Student Science Award and JSEC, and the hurdles for children to participate are quite high. Also, as the first steps in science and technology, the steps named “discovering problems” and “constructing hypotheses that nurture the spirit of science” are extremely important for children, but there is quite few places to announce such themes at the idea stage. Therefore, we have established a contest to solicit ideas related to science from middle and high school students who are currently researching science and technology, or who are about to do so, and it will present them opportunities of “meet and discuss” with real researchers.
In this contest, through discussions with scientists and by expert comments, children will notice and experience the “fun of creating” and the “fun of learning and discussing with real researchers.” We have summarized the points of the expert screening in the separately prepared "Startup Checklist", so please check it thoroughly when applying. Beginning with children's creative new ideas, the process, and results of a series of intellectual inquiry activities that develop not only knowledge, but also logical thinking will be judged.
It also provides an opportunity to meet and deepen friendships with presentation teams, visitors, and teachers from all over Japan and abroad, providing a unique opportunity to experience interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange.
Through this contest, we hope to "train young future researchers" in the field of science and technology, provide "a place to develop interest in science and technology at an early stage", and lead to raising the level of "scientific and technological capabilities".
The conference will be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center, which is used by scientists from around the world for academic conferences.
With the cooperation of many institutions, organizations, and universities, Tsukuba Science Edge will also hold a " Special Science Bus Tour” for participants from abroad, visiting surrounding national and corporate institutes, free of charge. (Japanese participants will attend some of workshops; refer to the Japanese Instruction.)
It will be an opportunity not only to develop an interest in science, but also to deepen exchanges with scientists and students from other schools, so please join us.

Points to note regarding presentation
When preparing your abstract and poster, please be sure to read the following points carefully and get your supervisor's final confirmation before submitting. Please be aware that you may be subject to restrictions in the contest's operations or be unable to publish your abstract due to legal violations or misconduct.
If you made revision or corrections by the Judge instructions during the document reviewing process, your revision will not be printed for the publication of the abstract collection. Your revision will be published in the PDF version released later on the official website.
- Themes that do not involve science, such as social sciences or humanities, are outside the scope of this contest and will not be judged.
- The idea must be one that has been independently thought up by an individual or group of junior high or high school students (to convey that it is an idea with a dream). If the research or technology idea is to be put into practice, the challenges to be overcome to realize it must be indicated.
- Solutions to problems for which a correct answer already exists are not eligible. (When the theme is an improvement or alternative to an existing solution, the high public value of the discovery must be objectively demonstrated.)
- As of this year, there will be no "Other" option in the subject category, so applicants must select one subject that corresponds to the academic or technical field that they consider to be the most important and worthy of recognition in their research.
- Depending on the stage of research development, applicants should select one of the following categories for their submission: "Initial Planning Stage," "Preliminary Results," or "Research Results." Research in the "Initial Planning Stage," which consists of ideas for which experimental results cannot be presented, should be submitted as a poster. Furthermore, applicants should conduct some kind of thought experiment to confirm and to demonstrate the validity of the research plan being presented.
- For applications with "Preliminary Results" or "Research Results," applicants should specifically demonstrate any results they have achieved through their thinking, experiments, etc., including thought experiments and intermediate results. Quantitative data and its interpretation should be attached as supporting documents for review whenever possible.
- The process and raw data, including the results obtained during the experiment, should be kept in a laboratory notebook to protect against unintended accidents (to protect against suspicions of fabrication or falsification).
- Existing research results by others, yourself, and your group must be clearly cited. It is inappropriate to describe existing results without citing them, even if they are your own. In other words, the main part of the content of your application should, in principle, be original to "Tsukuba Science Edge 2026." If previously published or planned publications are relevant, you must indicate these and then state that the original content of this application is the main part of the presentation. (To prevent suspicion of plagiarism or duplicate submission)
- Individuals and organizations (universities, research institutes, companies, etc.) that have supported the research should be acknowledged, clearly stating the name and details of their support, which will also serve to guarantee to a certain extent the value of the project and the quality of the results.
- If you have used generative AI (such as Chat GPT) in your abstract or presentation, it is recommended that you clearly state the location and method of use. There are no restrictions on using existing results or knowledge, but please note that the development of the discussion and conclusions must be original to the applicant.
- Comply with the laws and regulations of the country or region in which the experiment is conducted, and take the necessary procedures, especially for biological experiments involving humans or animals.
- In Japan, when research involving human subjects is recognized by the researcher or school as medical research, it must be stated that the research has been reviewed by an ethics committee or other such organization. Even if it is determined that review is not necessary, it must be stated that it has been confirmed that the human rights of the subjects will be respected and that the protection of their life, body, and mind from an ethical perspective will be guaranteed*.
- *) In Japan, in addition to the consent of research subjects who have received an explanation of the purpose of the research and how the results will be handled, consent from the guardian is also required if the subject is a minor. If personal information is included, the guardian's consent should be obtained in advance, and care must be taken to comply with the Personal Information Protection Act. Care must be taken to ensure proper management of not only data that is made public in presentations, but also data that is held as research data, especially in large-scale questionnaire surveys, even if it is not medical research.
- In Japan, regarding animal experiments involving non-human subjects, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Notification No. 71 applies only to technical colleges among secondary and high schools. Therefore, even in the case of research applications from schools other than technical colleges, it is understood that guidance is being given by instructors or school principals in accordance with the intent of this notification, and no special description is required.
- When engaging in research activities using highly toxic drugs or pathogenic viruses or bacteria, special considerations, warnings, and instruction regarding biosafety must be given to junior high and high school students, who do not normally learn about the risks of such experiments through regular academic instruction.
Especially in experiments involving anticancer drugs, immunosuppressants, or human cancer-derived cell lines that cannot be denied potential viral infectivity or metastatic potential to humans, students may be asked what kind of safety training they received in advance and what safety protection measures they have taken. - In addition to research misconduct such as fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, and duplicate submission, if any violation of the laws and regulations of each country or any conduct that disrespects human dignity or the environment is discovered, the submission may be revoked even after the contest has ended and awards have been given.
Guideline for Abstract
[ Abstract Form ]
- Use the official name of your school and ensure consistency between participant registration and abstract submission.
- Indicate whether your submission is at the stage of Initial Planning, Preliminary Results, or Research Results. This is mandatory for review.
- Attach any essential data or supplementary materials required for evaluation and submit them together with your abstract.
- Prepare a poster for the poster presentation. Teams that pass the document review must also prepare oral presentation materials such as PowerPoint slides.
- Select the research field from the provided list (e.g., high school subject names). If your topic falls under interdisciplinary or integrated fields, choose the most appropriate or closest option. Do not enter fields that are not listed.
- Applications without a selected field will not be accepted. If the selected field is deemed inappropriate, the Secretariat may change it to the most suitable category.
- Use the designated abstract form (A4 size, up to 2 pages). If more than 2 pages are submitted, only the first 2 pages will be published in the abstract collection.
- Font type and size are free, but avoid extremely small fonts or layouts that cram too much content, as this will hinder readability during review and publication.
- All presentations must include research data and related discussion. For Preliminary Results and Research Results, attach quantitative photos, charts, or figures that support your abstract as explanatory materials for the judges.
- Number and title all figures and photos, and provide brief captions where possible. Submit these materials in color without reduction for clarity. There is no page limit for supplementary materials.
- Both the abstract (maximum 2 pages) and supplementary materials must be prepared in Word format.
- After registration is complete, revisions will not be accepted after the deadline. If you contact the Secretariat before the deadline and receive approval, you must re-upload all data, including the revised sections, as a single set. Only the final uploaded version will be reviewed; previous versions will be discarded.
