 Message from Dr. Leo ESAKI

写真
Director of Tsukuba International Congress Center, President of Tsukuba Science Academy
Dr. Leo Esaki
Graduated from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, The University of Tokyo. A physicist who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1973), the Order of Culture (1974), and the International Prize of the American Physical Society (1985). His wide-ranging achievements, especially in the field of semiconductor physics, which is the basis of modern electronics, include the discovery of the tunnel effect in semiconductor PN junctions and the proposal and realization of the semiconductor superlattice concept. A researcher who has pioneered a completely new field and has had a major impact on modern condensed matter physics in general.

I have high expectations for the “imagination”
of junior and senior high school students!

Our intelligence can be broadly divided into two categories.
One is the ability to analyze, understand, and judge things, and to discriminate fairly (judicious mind). The other is the ability to create new ideas based on rich creativity and foresight (creative mind). Discernment, having an impersonal aspect, can be said to deal with the known subjects, whereas creativity is individual and challenges the unknown. This creativity is the driving force for the reform and progress and will continue to develop human civilization. I would like to see young people like you develop your creativity.

What is Tsukuba Science Edge?

Discuss with leading scientists!

"Tsukuba Science Edge" is a place to gather presenting scientific "ideas" based on class assignments and club activities in schools, but individual participation is welcome as well.
Your idea presentations will be discussed on the spot with Dr. Leona Esaki and other scientists.
The venue for your presentation is the "Tsukuba International Congress Center" where scientists from all over the world gather!
This is your chance to stand on the same stage as real scientists.
Please come and join us at "Tsukuba Science Edge," where you can come to touch the "cutting edge of science“ together with researchers!

Message for Teachers and Parents

Cultivate children's creativity and logical thinking through science!

Conventionally, science-related contests for junior and senior high school students are essay-based contests such as the Japan Student Science Award and JSEC, and the hurdles for children to participate are quite high. Also, as the first steps in science and technology, the steps named “discovering problems” and “constructing hypotheses that nurture the spirit of science” are extremely important for children, but there is quite few places to announce such themes at the idea stage.

Therefore, we have established a contest to solicit ideas related to science from middle and high school students who are currently researching science and technology, or who are about to do so, and it will present them opportunities of “meet and discuss” with real researchers.

In this contest, through discussions with scientists, children will notice and experience the “fun of creating” and the “fun of learning and discussing with real researchers.” We have summarized the points of the expert screening in the separately prepared "Startup Checklist", so please check it thoroughly when applying. Beginning with children's creative new ideas, the process, and results of a series of intellectual inquiry activities that develop not only knowledge, but also logical thinking will be judged.

Through this contest, we hope to "train young future researchers" in the field of science and technology, provide "a place to develop interest in science and technology at an early stage", and lead to raising the level of "scientific and technological capabilities".

The conference will be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center, which is used by scientists from around the world for academic conferences.

With the cooperation of many institutions, organizations, and universities, Tsukuba Science Edge will also hold a " Special Science Bus Tour” for participants from abroad, visiting surrounding national institutes, free of charge. (Japanese participants will attend some of workshops; refer to the Japanese Instruction)

It will be an opportunity not only to develop an interest in science, but also to deepen exchanges with scientists and students from other schools, so please join us.

Recruitment period

Wed. November 1st, 2023 to Thu. January 11th, 2024 at 23:59 in Japan Standard Time.

* Please note that new applications cannot be accepted after the deadline.

Points to note regarding presentation

  1. Include ideas independently thought by junior and senior high school students (so that it can be conveyed that it is an idea with a dream)
  2. When giving a shape to a research/technical idea, indicate the issues that need to be addressed before it can be realized.
  3. Related findings and ideas of others must be cited as prior research in references (papers, etc.), in the description of the background. In that case, please include the experimental method and its discussion as references.
  4. Depending on the progress stage of the research, select and apply for either "initial planning stage," "preliminary results," or "research results." If it is exploratory research, reviewers must confirm the validity of the proposed research plan by conducting some kind of thought experiment even at the initial planning stage.
  5. Concretely show some kind of result of the applicant's thoughts, experiments, etc., including brain storming and intermediate real results. As this is the most important point in the review of "preliminary results/research results", quantitative data and their interpretation should be attached as much as possible.
  6. For experiments using humans, be sure to state that the experiment has been reviewed by an ethics committee, etc., or that there is no need for review, in accordance with your country’s law. For the Japanese delegates: animal experiments other than humans, instructors and affiliations are required to review “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Notification No. 71”. We understood that instruction is being conducted at your schools, etc., based on the purpose of this MEXT notification, and no description is required.
  7. In principle, the main part of the content of the application must be the original content of "Tsukuba Science Edge 2024". If there is a connection between your previously announced and scheduled publications, please indicate them before submitting this application. Please clearly demonstrate that the main content is unique to your study in that case.
  8. If the whole or the main part of the content of the application has been published or submitted to elsewhere by the time of the announcement, it will not be accepted even if the title or authors are different. Therefore, please be careful not to make duplicate presentations with the same content and be sure to cite related results of the group to which the applicant belongs. In addition, please fully explain the autonomy and relevance of the application for the work that is scheduled to have been published elsewhere at the time of this application.

  • You can select the field that applies to you from the names of high school subjects, but depending on your assignment and purpose, it may be a interdisciplinary field or an integrated field. In that case, please refer to the following and always choose the best one. Please note that this is a mandatory item for registration, so applications without a field selected will not be accepted.
  • Please note that if the field reflecting the content is not appropriate, the secretariat will change it to the most suitable field.
  • Please refer to Startup checklist to fill in the abstract forms.
  • You may fill this form up to two sheets of A4 size papers.
